Accessibility on the Roku® platform
Roku strives to provide an enjoyable streaming entertainment experience for our users, including users with disabilities. Roku products include features that enhance the accessibility of streaming entertainment available on the Roku platform.
Accessibility features
Screen Reader
Roku’s screen reader provides an accessible entertainment experience for people with visual impairments or blindness. The Screen reader is a text-to-speech feature that assists customers with navigation of the Roku user interface and onscreen menus. When activated, the screen reader will read out text, menus, and other onscreen items.
The screen reader can be turned on or off by pressing the Options button on the Roku remote four times quickly. The Options button is located just below the directional pad and at the right-hand side of the Roku remote.
Customers can also turn the screen reader on or off within the Accessibility category of the Settings menu. Other options include adjusting the speech rate, speech volume or disabling the screen reader remote shortcut.
The screen reader is available on all Roku TV™ models and Roku players currently being sold in the US and Canada. To enable the screen reader your Roku device must be updated to Roku OS 7.5 or later.
For more information, see the screen reader documentation.
Closed Captioning
Closed captioning helps people who are d/Deaf or hard-of-hearing by displaying text on the television screen to provide transcription of the audio within a movie or TV show. Please note that the movie or TV show must support closed captioning in order for the text to display on the screen.
Closed captions can be turned on or off within the Accessibility category of the Settings menu.
For more information, see the closed captioning documentation.
Voice Search
With the free Roku mobile app for iOS® or Android™, you can use your voice to search for content. Tap the Voice button, speak out loud what you’re looking for, and receive comprehensive results across top channels. You can search for entertainment by title, actor, or director.
Voice search is also available on select Roku player remote controls. To use voice search and voice control your Roku streaming device must be running Roku OS 9.4 or higher.
For more information, see the voice search documentation and the Roku mobile app documentation.

- The development and revision of accessibility standards and the making of regulations must be done with the objective of achieving the highest level of accessibility for persons with disabilities.
