Why you should look beyond screen size when purchasing your next TV

When buying a new TV, it’s easy for our minds to jump straight to “What size TV should I get?” Although size does matter, there are plenty of other factors to consider when finding the one that’s right for you.

Make sure you ask yourself these six questions on your search for your next TV…

  1. What TV OS is right for me?

That’s right, TVs have operating systems – just like your mobile or laptop does.

And if you need four PHDs and a manual the size of the entire Lord of the Rings series to learn how to use your Smart TV it’s probably not a smart purchase.

A good OS (the software that controls the TV’s functions) should be welcoming, not overwhelming. It should be easy and intuitive to navigate menus, launch apps, and stream content and include all the features you need. And most importantly, it should always be up to date.

Roku TVs include the same OS used in its streaming players, which (incoming humble brag) are known for being simple, straightforward, and user-friendly.

  1. What resolution should I look for in a new TV?

With so many resolution options out there, how do you know which is right for you? Is it HD? 4K? Or maybe QLED is the one.

HD makes sense if you’re looking for a smaller TV, for instance 32” or below, like the RCA Roku TV. 4K makes a real difference for slightly bigger TVs in the 40”-50” range, delivering a sharper, more detailed image and giving objects on screen much more depth (ideal for everything from live sport to Meet me in Paris). QLED TVs take things to another level still as they are significantly brighter and more colourful than 4K TVs – perfect for bringing the next bingeworthy show to life on 55” screens and above.

  1. Can I get a good Smart TV in my budget?

There’s a Smart TV to meet everyone’s needs and everyone’s budget. A bigger budget will likely guarantee a bigger-size TV screen, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you will get all your favourite features.

It can be easy to think you’ll have to raise your budget to get the TV you want, but things like contract ratio (higher the better for realistic images), colour accuracy (making sure TV looks like real life), and viewing angles (wide angles mean everyone gets the best seat in the house) are important to factor in at every budget.

  1. Will I be able to access all my streaming services easily?

There’s nothing more annoying than finding out a TV doesn’t enable the streaming service app that’s home to the latest must-watch show. And not all Smart TVs were made equal.

Make sure the services you stream the most are available on the TV you have your eyes on to avoid that last-second disappointment.

A bonus feature on all Roku TVs is they come with a Smart remote, which has buttons for some of the most popular streaming services for quick access, or voice search for the ultimate in easy search.

  1. How can I make sure I get the best sound when watching TV?

As designs for TVs become thinner, the sound they produce can become a little tinnier than expected. To make sure you don’t need to rewind for any plot twists, and you can hear every decibel of the blockbuster movie, account for the sound capabilities of the TV before making any purchase.

Our top tip? Look for Dolby Audio integrated TVs for a powerful and immersive soundstage. If you want to amplify your experience even further, look for companion in the shape of a soundbar.

  1. I will use my TV for gaming. What is important to consider?

If you’re a gamer, you’ll want your TV to have a fast response time and low input lag. Finding a TV that offers both will help make sure your games look and feel as smooth as their creators intended. (Disclaimer: We can’t guarantee they will help you beat your friends.)

Remember these six questions and you’ll be smart about your Smart TV purchase. Because, while size does matter, it is not the only thing that defines your TV-watching experience.

By asking yourself what else is important – from audio quality and app accessibility to price – you can find the TV that is the perfect match for you.
