Roku UK: New Releases and Recommendations for 26h September 2014

This week we had some 20^th anniversaries to celebrate including: The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction (this week’s Golden Oldie recommendation) and Friends – quality and entertaining viewing that has stood the test of time.

Back to 2014 and some recommendations for this week – how many of these will we still be watching on our Roku players in 20 years’ time?

• BoJack Horseman (Series) – Another Netflix original series, meet the most beloved sitcom horse of the ’90s but 20 years later. BoJack Horseman was the star of the hit TV show “Horsin’ Around,” but today he’s washed up, living in a Hollywood bachelor pad, complaining about everything, and sometimes wearing colourful sweaters. Set in an L.A. where humans and anthropomorphic animal-people coexist, “BoJack Horseman” is about one man (well, horse-man) who peaked too early and must figure out what to do next.
• Bad Education (Series) – Back for its third series, Jack Whitehall continues to entertain as a teacher who is a bigger kid than the kids he teaches. Watch the first episodes of the new series on BBC iPlayer.
• Grand Piano (Movie) – Moments before his comeback performance, acclaimed concert pianist Tom Selznick (Elijah Wood) is about to try to overcome his crippling stage fright when he discovers a note written on his music sheet. It warns him that if he doesn’t deliver a note-perfect recital…his wife (Kerry Bishé) will die. Watch it on Sky Store.
• The Men with Many Wives (Documentary) – This revealing documentary explores the world of polygamous marriages among British Muslims. While polygamy is illegal under British law, it is permitted under Sharia law, and although unusual, some estimate that there are as many as 20,000 polygamous marriages among Muslims in the UK today. The programme examines the daily challenges of polygamous life and the motivation of those who are looking for another wife. Catch the first episode now on 4oD.
• Under the Dome (Series) – Channel 5 brings the second series of this hit US series starring Mike Vogel, Rachelle Lefevre and Dean Norris, to the UK, which sees an invisible force field descends upon a small town in the north-eastern part of the United States. Catch up now on Demand 5.
• Sabotage (Movie) – Veteran cop John Breacher (Arnold Schwarzenegger) leads a play-by-their-own-rules undercover DEA unit who aren’t above trousering a slice of the cash during a drugs bust. However, when they make the mistake of pilfering the profits of a vicious Latin American cartel, they find themselves being brutally picked off one-by-one. It’s up to Breacher – with the help of Olivia Williams’ detective – to hunt down their lethal assailants. Stream it on Sky Store.
• Boardwalk Empire (Series) – Produced by Martin Scorsese, Boardwalk Empire follows the corrupt and charismatic Atlantic City Treasurer Enoch ‘Nucky’ Thompson as prohibition gives rise to widespread organised crime. Watch all five seasons on Now TV.
• Long Lost Family – What Happened Next (Documentary) – This three part series sees Davina McCall follow-up nine of the most extraordinary searches in the past series including three women who were determined to track down a family member, whatever the cost. Watch the first two episodes on ITV Player.
• Wreck-It Ralph (Movie) – It’s not easy being mean. But when Wreck-It Ralph (John C Reilly), the villain of a classic 8-bit arcade game, decides he no longer wants to be the bad guy, his efforts to change the status quo and play the hero could mean game over for the entire video game universe. Watch this Disney animation on Now TV.

Golden Oldie:

• Pulp Fiction (Movie) – Another favourite celebrating its 20^th anniversary, Quentin Tarantino’s stylised crime caper weaves together stories featuring a burger-loving hit man, his philosophical partner and a washed-up boxer. Watch it now on Netflix.
