IRIS (2014) – Netflix, Amazon Video
IRIS pairs legendary 87-year-old filmmaker Albert Maysles with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how, even at Iris’ advanced age, a soaring free spirit continues to inspire.
Amy (2015) Amazon Video / Sky Store
From BAFTA Award-winning director Asif Kapadia, AMY tells the incredible story of six-time Grammy-winner Amy Winehouse –in her own words. Featuring extensive unseen archival footage and previously unheard tracks, this powerful documentary invites audiences to remember and celebrate Amy Winehouse as a brilliant artist who succumbed to an untimely death at the age of just 27.
Searching for Sugar Man (2012) – Amazon Video
In the late ‘60s, musician Sixto Rodriguez was discovered in a Detroit bar by two celebrated producers who were struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics. They recorded an album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Despite critical acclaim, the album bombed and Rodriguez disappeared into obscurity amid rumours of suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way to apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, it became a phenomenon. Two South African fans set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the myths about the artist known as Rodriguez. This is a film about hope, inspiration and the resonating power of music.
Generation Iron (2013) – Amazon Video (Included with Amazon Prime), Sky Store
Mickey Rourke narrates this documentary profiling some of the world’s top bodybuilders as they train for the Mr. Olympia competition. Featured contestants include Kai Greene, Dennis Wolf and Phil Heath, with special appearances by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno and Jay Cutler.
