Introducing new Roku features: Backdrops, Roku Smart Picture, and more

Your TV pulls the room together in more ways than one.

That’s why we’re announcing a suite of new Roku features designed to enhance your TV experience — even when you’re not streaming. Read on to learn more about Backdrops, Roku Smart Picture, and more updates coming soon to your Roku device.

Roku OS 13

Backdrops

While peak streaming has given us many prestige shows that could only be described as works of art, your TV should be a masterpiece even while you aren’t binging. With Backdrops, we’ve made it easy to set the mood for your room with a wide selection of free, delightful artwork. If you’re feeling like a master curator, upload your own portraits to make Backdrops your very own. This feature will roll out on Roku TVs in the coming months followed by streaming devices at a later date.

Roku Smart Picture

Let’s be real — adjusting your picture settings is the last thing you want to think about before movie night. With Roku Smart Picture, we’ve taken the guesswork out of the equation. Across participating apps, your TV intelligently adjusts the backlighting, uniformity, and colors on your screen, offering a better TV viewing experience so you can sit back and relax. Any Roku-branded TV purchased in the spring of 2024 and onward will come with Roku Smart Picture as the default, and those purchased before that date will need to enable it in picture settings.

Browse and Discovery updates

These days, it can feel like we have too many incredible shows and movies to choose from. We’re not complaining, but we think you should spend less time browsing and more time watching the shows you love. We’ve made it easy to decide what to watch with expanded information, including new sources like IMDb and trailers:

  • IMDb ratings: With IMDb ratings included in entertainment details, picking quality entertainment at-a-glance is easier than ever. We’ve even included a new row in What to Watch featuring content with the highest IMDb ratings.
  • Trailers: Seamlessly preview content while looking for your next streaming obsession. Trailers will be available in entertainment details, eliminating the need to switch apps.
  • Save List updates: Your Save List isn’t just a way to favorite shows for later — it could also save you money. New episodes, seasons, and even price drops will bring titles that may have been at the end of your Save List right to the front.

New Mobile App features

The Roku mobile app is your free, on-the-go entertainment hub and it’s about to get even better:

  • The navigation bar will be streamlined to include five universal tabs: Home, Search, Remote, Devices, and Account.
  • Find content that’s popular with other streamers across the platform in the “Top Searched TV and Movies” row.
  • Search results will be more visually immersive when browsing new categories or actors.

And one more thing…

Cars in Roku City

Start your engines! Everyone’s favorite TV screensaver is revving up with five never-before-seen cars cruising down the streets of Roku City. Keep an eye on the City Stroll: Movie Magic screensaver in the coming weeks to spot these new arrivals.

Happy Streaming!
