How to get the most out of your new Roku Home Screen

When you first see the new Roku Home Screen, you’ll see a streaming experience built around you. You’ll see your apps, what you were watching the night before, and some suggestions to get you started on something new. But the interesting part is what happens next.

As you keep using it, your Roku Home Screen will start to pick up on your patterns—what you watch on weeknights, what the family plays on weekends, the shows and shortcuts you keep coming back to. Because of this, it will get a better sense of what you might want, and it’ll start putting the right things in front of you.

Instead of endlessly scrolling, you’ll get more of those moments where you turn on the TV and immediately think, “Yep, that’s exactly what I want to watch.”

That’s been the plan all along. When we started working on this update, we kept coming back to the idea that streaming should just feel easy. Personalization should feel helpful, not overwhelming. You should find something you enjoy faster, without wasting your time.

You can get all of that with your new Home Screen.

Customizable by design — thoughtful by default

This new layout is based on years of learning how people actually stream: where they pause, what they go back to, how they find something new. Behind the scenes, we’ve kept some things consistent—easy access to your favorite apps and shortcuts, the same amount of ads, and the familiar design. But now you can sit back and let Roku learn all your preferences, interests, and comfort watches. And in very little time, you’ll see something truly refreshed, but still organized and easy to use.

That said, we know everyone has their own way of doing things. If you like to customize, you absolutely can.

The fastest way to personalize your Home Screen is to give Roku a few signals about what you like (and don’t like). The more you nudge it, the smarter it gets:

• Thumbs up or down on recommendations so we learn your taste.
  (Press the ★ button or rate from the content details page.)
• Customize Quick Access by adding apps or TV inputs you use most—or removing the ones you don’t.   (Press the ★ button on any tile.)
• Save shows and favorite teams to help us surface things you’ll want to watch later.

For further customization options, you can turn recommendations row on or off, resize tiles, and move your apps around so your App Grid is front and center.  Even Quick Access can be adjusted or removed entirely, if you want something more familiar.

It’s your TV. You can customize it, but we’ve made the layout so you don’t have to—it’s designed to fit right out of the box.

This is just the beginning

This update is a big step, but it’s not the finish line.

We’re going to keep improving the Home Screen based on how people use it and what we hear from you. Because the best streaming experience should evolve and keep up with you.

For now though, it’s already doing what we hoped it would: helping you spend less time searching and more time watching things you actually enjoy.
