Movies to watch on Valentine’s Day in Canada

Some people have a love-hate relationship with Valentine’s Day. Other believe it’s a great day to celebrate the love of their life and for some it’s a reminder of love lost. The good thing is there is a plethora of movies available on your Roku streaming devices devoted to relationships and Valentine’s Day that covers the entire range of emotions that come with love. We’ve come up with 10 outside the box movies to watch on Valentine’s Day.

Bull Durham (Google Play, Cineplex Store)
Bull Durham starring Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins is one of the most revered sports movies of all time. It’s about more than sports as it showcases the interplay between the three main characters. A great film that was a breakthrough picture for Costner, Robbins and Sarandon.

 

The Graduate (Google Play, Cineplex Store)
The Graduate follows Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) as he returns home to his parents after graduating from college. As he is trying to find himself, he falls prey to the seduction of Mrs. Robinson, (Anne Bancroft). As their relationship heats up Benjamin is introduced and falls for the Robinson’s daughter, Elaine (Katharine Ross) complicating things

 

Beauty and the Beast (Netflix, Google Play, Cineplex Store)
The classic story of love being more than superficial. When an arrogant young prince falls under the spell of a wicked enchantress, who turns him into the ugly Beast, he needs to learn how to love and be loved to break out of the curse. It is only when Belle enters his life that the hideous Beast starts to come out isolation and learns the true meaning of love.

 

My Sassy Girl (The Roku Channel)
This South Korean film tells the story of a male college student, Gyeon-woo (Cha Tae-Hyun), and a girl (Jun Ji-hyun) who is never named in the movie. Gyeon-woo can’t seem to catch a romantic break but he starts to build a relationship with this girl he met. Throughout the first half of the movie she is doesn’t treat Gyeon-woo well but as the second half comes around, she begins to change and show her vulnerability.

 

Groundhog Day (Google Play, Cineplex Store)
Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is an arrogant news reporter who hates being assigned to cover weather or not “Punxsutawney Phil” the Groundhog sees his shadow. A strange thing happens to Phil as he gets caught in time loop experiencing Groundhog Day over and over again. To get out of this time loop Phil needs to live the perfect day and this includes making his feelings for his producer Rita (Andy McDowell) known.

 

The Princess Bride (Google Play, Cineplex Store)
The classic movie the Princess Bride is full of interesting characters in unique settings. There are several different stories and subplots but the main story revolves around Buttercup (Robin Wright) falling in love with Westley (Carl Elwes). Their love is tested after Westley disappears before they can get married and after years of being away, Buttercup agrees to marry Prince Humperdink (Chris Humperdink).

 

Slumdog Millionaire (Google Play, Cineplex Store)
Slumdog Millionaire is a great love story of true love finding its way. When Jamal (Dev Patel), a former beggar, becomes a contestant on “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?” he uses the show to re-connect with the love of his childhood, Latika (Freida Pinto). Things are complicated for Jamal as Latika has become ensnared in a life of crime.

  

His Girl Friday (The Roku Channel)
A forgotten classic that is considered one of the funniest romantic comedies made. Reporter Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) is going to re-marry and move on to a new life as a stay at home wife. Her editor and ex-husband Walter Burns (Cary Grant) doesn’t want to lose Hildy as a reporter or re-marry. Walter does whatever he can to change her mind by placing her potential new husband in a bad light and by dangling a big story for her to cover in the hopes she will change her mind about ending her career.

 

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Google Play, Cineplex Store)
Although not considered a traditional Valentine’s Day movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has a little bit of everything in a movie. The movie is full of incredible fight scenes and battles but at its core the story centre around the complex relationship between Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat) and Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) along with the love between Jiao Long (Ziyi Zhang) and Luo Xiao Hu (Chen Chang). A fantastic film that loses nothing when watched with sub-titles.

 

Mount Joy (The Roku Channel)
Lancaster County’s small town band “Living Daylights” looks to have finally found their big break as they are part of an upcoming national tour. Of course there’s a twist as the disappearance of the lead singer’s girlfriend, who is also the band’s manager, and the devastating secret she harbours could mean the end to it all. This indie-rock film morphs into a drama in the second half of the film that makes it stand out.

Of course, there are other classic films like Gone with the Wind, Singin’ in the Rain and Casablanca which are great love stories and some of the greatest movies ever made. Be sure to check them out on your Roku TV or with your Roku player.
