A look at 2015 at Roku: A Great Year for Streaming

Howdy!

As we get ready to enter 2016, I want to take the time to thank our customers, partners and employees for a remarkable year here at Roku.

We continue to reach new milestones across the Roku platform. We streamed 5.5 billion hours in 2015, a 73% increase over 2014. We now have more than 9 million monthly active Roku accounts. That’s a lot of streamers!

The Roku OS, our operating system purpose-built for the TV, is powering more TVs than ever before as we end 2015 with a presence in 10 countries – US, Canada, UK, Republic of Ireland, Germany, Italy, France, Mexico, Austria and Australia.Sharp_Roku TV_home-screen

  • On the Roku TV licensing front our TV partners launched nearly 40 Roku TV models in the U. S. bringing Roku TV’s smart TV market share to approximately 8%1. That’s just in 2015, up from 0% in early 2014 when we announced the program. We also welcomed the first Roku TV models in Canada from the Insignia and Sharp brands.
  • We launched the new, faster Roku 2, the Roku 3 with a voice search remote and the new Roku 4 which streams 4K UHD at up to 60 fps as well as HD.
  • CNET gave our new Roku 2 5/5 stars and their Editors’ Choice Award.
  • Consumer Reports chose the Roku 4 as their “top choice for a 4K-enabled streaming player.”

  • Our Roku Powered™ licensing program for operators now includes Sky in Italy, Germany and Austria, as well as Telstra in Australia. These innovative companies are delivering pay TV packages to their customers through Roku players using the Roku platform.
  • On the advertising front we continue to build out the Roku Ad Framework and enhance the tools we offer publishers and advertisers such as our measurement partnership with Nielsen.
  • We are committed to offering consumers the best streaming OS available while enabling our TV OEM, service operators, content and advertising partners to be successful in building their streaming businesses.
  • Because we focus solely on the best streaming experience, and don’t make or license our own content, we often offer content others don’t. That’s why you’ll find Google Play, Walmart’s VUDU and Amazon Video/Prime Video all in the Roku Channel Store in the U.S.
  • We now have over 3,000+ streaming channels in the U.S. including access to more than 300,000 movies and TV episodes.
  • Our unbiased and comprehensive universal search provides an industry-leading tool to help customers find content among all this choice.
  • Our mobile companion app makes using a cell phone to access key features easy – like Roku Search, Roku Feed, Remote Control, Play on Roku and more. We also support wireless display and DIAL – allowing consumers to cast content from their phone to the TV.
  • According to a new survey2 conducted for Roku by the NPD Group in November 2015, consumers with Roku devices stream more hours every week than those with competitor devices (Apple TV, Chromecast and Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Fire Stick) or any brand of smart TV. Thank you for streaming your hearts out this year!

I can’t wait to share what we have planned for 2016. Hint: we’ll have some news at CES in just a few days.

Stream on!
