Celebrating 10 Years of Roku TV!

Since launching in 2014, Roku TV has come a long way.

It all began with a bold vision to change the way that people watch TV. Over the past decade, Roku TV has done just that, bringing simplicity and delight to living rooms around the world. Roku TV has not only transformed television but has also become a household name and even a cultural phenomenon (hello, Roku City!).

Let’s look back at where it all began, and how Roku became the #1 streaming platform in America.

10 Years of Roku TV

Innovating for TV’s greater good 

Roku TV started small, with two brands in the United States and Canada integrating the Roku operating system into their TVs. What allowed for Roku TV’s growth was the user-friendly design, created with the simple goal of getting streamers to their favorite entertainment with the click of a button.

Within a year of Roku TV’s debut, the first 4K Roku TV models hit the market, bringing advanced display technology to more homes—and it only continues to get more advanced, with QLED, mini-LED, and OLED models now in the lineup. Roku TV became a quick success, garnering numerous industry awards and accolades over the years.

At CES in 2020, we announced that a whopping 15 TV brands were to launch Roku TV models in Canada, Mexico, the United States and the United Kingdom. Today we partner with 34 unique TV brands across 17 different countries. The product struck (or rather, cut) the right cord at the right time: Our partnerships with top-selling TV brands meant that Roku TV was fundamental to the smart TV market’s growth, helping Smart TV penetration reach 99% of households.

Using our knowledge of what makes for the best TV for our users, last year we launched the very first Roku-branded TVs: the Roku Select and Plus Series. This year, the Roku-branded family grew with the introduction of the Pro Series—featuring premium QLED mini-LED backlighting, Roku Soundstage Audio, Backdrops, and more. Roku-made TVs have allowed for innovations that benefit all Roku TV partners and enhance the overall Roku TV experience for everyone.

New tech, same mission 

As the landscape has evolved, so have we. We’re constantly tapping into and embracing new technologies while staying loyal to our roots and our desire to make TV simple and delightful. Our automatic software updates bring new features, functionality and entertainment to our customersthe TV they own just keeps getting better and better. We’ve added exciting features such as enhanced personalization, smart home integration, and recently Backdrops, which turns your TV into a living room work of art. 

We’re just getting started 

It’s no mystery how Roku became the #1 selling TV OS in the U.S. or how we’ve maintained that status for more than five years. Roku TV made streaming super simple, bringing streamers to the shows and movies they love. We continue on this quest by listening to our customers, leveraging the latest technologies and continually improving the experience to make the TV viewing experience even more entertaining.
